Luis Gordillo, en la Feria estampa, Madrid

Gordillo collage

One of the clearest signs that defines the creativity of great artists is their power of irradiation, starting from the nucleus or core of their expressive approach. In the case of Luis Gordillo, that irradiation force has sprung -unfailingly throughout his career- from the distinctive dynamism of his work. Gordillo's painting is never still, but always moving.
Going a step further. dynamism irradiation is aesthetically materialised in what I would call duality or unfolding: a creative game capable of articulating different levels of vision in a single representational pole, where they all overlap and integrate, allowing us to appreciate the polyhedral and open nature of what we call "reality" This is how level diversity is reached in the unity of the work, which over time has characterised -with all kinds of variants- the different series and creative proposals of this unique, special and unforgettable artist and painter.

Ultimately, in Luis Gordillo, in his work, two eyes are many. All his creative irradiation flows from his gaze towards a type of representation capable of cutting, overlapping, displacing, disseminating and multiplying: pasting, integrating what we usually see from a homogenous vision level. This creative principle has -in my point of view- a specific and personal name: Gordillo collage, which could well be a signature of his works.
However, we must understand it properly. This is not simply cutting and pasting. Gordillo collage implies -as has always been the case since this creative process began to be used in the early twentieth century- a mentalist attitude. The artist integrates in his mind senses, concepts and levels of representation to expedite a vision that questions flat gazes and one-dimensional representations.

To achieve the dynamism of his painting, Luis Gordillo relied -almost since the beginning of his career- on the echoes of photography and graphic artwork, procedures which are basic in terms of image multiplication. Thereby, he achieved -in his articulation through collage- a dismemberment or flowing examination of his representation, full of dynamism, which allows us to see the world both in his aleatory examinations and in motion. Obviously, digital media has intensified the possibility of playing with image: modifying, disseminating and reflecting it through collage in painting and various print media.
Gordillo collage has continued operating -logically- through these relatively new media, which can be intensely seen in the set of works publicly presented on this occasion. The Oxygenating series (2009-2016), the Payseyes 2, A, B y C triptych (2016), the from the bridge diptych (2016), the from the bridge polyptych (2016) and the germinating print (2016) articulate painting, photography and digital processes in a cascade of irradiations and unfoldings, as a refined way of questioning homogenous and simplistic gazes. Walk through these rooms carefully. Take your time to observe. Sense the colour irradiation explosion, the atoms and cells of the visual representation, the fragmentation and overlapping of shapes through variations, the unfolding, the eyeglasses as an engraved sign in what is seen, the shadow, the shadow that slides, the reflection of the projection of the beholder. And so, he makes us see. Gordillo collage: in this universe of flat screens in which we live today, only art and critical thinking allow us to go further, to see beyond the homogenous examination of the homogenous gaze. Gordillo collage: observe freely.
